What are Bioactives?

Bioactives are naturally occurring compounds in wholefoods that have biological effects when consumed by living organisms. These compounds when prepared and eaten as part of a balanced diet, influence health and wellbeing by working together with other nutrients and phytochemicals in our food.

Bioactives.
What is in it for you?

The link between healthy eating habits and health outcomes is well known.

With the increase in dietary-related diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, obesity and type 2 diabetes, we want to educate our community about the benefits of wholefoods and how their bioactive properties can assist in improving health and preventing disease.

What does this project aim to do?

We want to look more closely as why bioactives are important to our health and what plant choices offer the best bioactive choice for a particular nutrient. The project also plans to look further into the effect processing steps such as light, heat etc. have on the levels of bioactives in foods and how our bodies can absorb those nutrients. This information aims to link and extend beyond data provided in the Australian Food Composition Database.

By examining the science behind bioactives, and clarifying it in terms that are easy to understand, we want to arm our community with the nutritional information they need to make simple fresh product food choices that can benefit their everyday health and wellbeing.
